What Is FSSAI?
The primary organization that keeps an eye on the safety and hygienic conditions of all food and beverage items in India is the Food Security and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The FSSAI must certify all food business operators (FBOs) in India. To assist you in submitting an application for an FSSAI registration or certification, you can enlist the assistance of experts. All FBOs are required to follow FSSAI regulations. Penalties would apply if the FSSAI regulatory standards were not followed.
Kinds of Certification From the FSSAI:
You must apply for one of the following, depending on the turnover of your food business:
- Registration: All FBOs in the nation must register if their annual sales is less than 12 lakhs.
- State-issued ID A state license is required for all FBOs with yearly revenues between $124,000 and $20,000,000.
- licensing central: You must submit an application for a central license if your company has an annual revenue of more than 20 crores.
What Does an FSSAI Number Look Like?
Any food firm would receive a 14-digit FSSAI license number. To any FBO that submits an application to the FSSAI, the food authority issues a standard numerical system of licenses.
Decoding the FSSAI Number:
There are 5 sections in the FSSAI registration/license number. Each section of the license number contains details about the FBO that they might use to divide the FBOs into different categories.
Section 1
The first digit represents the first part. It indicates whether the restaurant or other food establishment has an FSSAI registration or license. The first digit will be “1” if it is an FSSAI registration number. The first digit would be “2” if the company holds an FSSAI license.
Section 2
The second part of the number contains the second and third digits. They stand in for the state code for FSSAI certification where the company is registered and conducting business. Any state license is identified by the following digits, but a central license is identified by the digit “00”.
Section 3
The third segment of the certification number, which shows the year the food company operator acquired the license/registration from the FSSAI, includes the fourth and fifth digits of the fssai certification number.
Section 4
Section 4 of the FSSAI number includes the 6th, 7th, and 8th digits. These stand in for the Registrar Officer whose purview the FSSAI license or registration is subject to. From 001 through 999, a Registrar Officer is assigned to each of the states.
Section 5
It contains the remaining nine to fourteen digits of the FSSAI numbers. These numbers stand for the FBO’s serial number under a certain Registrar Officer. It stands in for the special FSSAI number. Each Registrar Officer may hold up to 10 lakh food businesses or 999999 serial numbers.
